Adding up

Rain on the roof made me think; it happens.

Just trivial things though, it’s dead of night after all, time for deep sleep, not for deep thought.

Still, trivial or not, thoughts com. Like; How come numbers merge when you add them up and letters just add.

1+2= 3, Saying  1+2= 12 would be wrong, that’s the deal. The shape of the 1 and the 2 merge and make a new shape, the 3.  Now try that with A and B and you will spend a long time looking on your keyboard for a new shape that will merges the two.

While numbers merge like raindrops in a puddle, letters stand their ground and merge more like pebbles on a beach.

Granted, in speech, letters merge more or less, vanish even when words to which they belong are pronounced. Take the W in answer for instance; Answer me this, who in their right mind will make their mouths form the W in there? Still it stands it’s ground and manages to confuse me every time I write an answer.

Not only do letters stand their ground, they demand their rightful place. Where you can mix up numbers at will, like 2685 – 6258 – 8562 or 5826 and they still make sense, but letters won’t stand for a mix up like that, any dyslectic can tell you that. Shuffle letters of Love into Evol, Ovle, or Vleo and you have nothing much to make heads or tails of.

Maybe it’s because there are just a few letters that has them hold on to their individuality, while the amount of numbers is infinite. On second thought the latter might only have 10.  That right there is a thought that will keep me up for an hour or so. But the warm anise milk is done and the hot water bottle is reheated and I know by now to draw the line before I get to thinking about time; so back to bed and let the drops of rain merge with the puddle of trivial thoughts in my sleepy head into  a colorful dream.

On color ….

No, no shhh woman, save those thoughts for the next night of trivial pursuit.

Bon nuit a tous
