Blocks
You could argue that building blocks and writers blocks are fundamentally different things, after all, building blocks are meant for construction, while writers blocks are an obstruction. And to most that argument would stand and not be corrected.
But while I sit here, and outside the rain is pouring down and has been doing so in bucket loads for days now, I come to you to argue that building blocks and writes blocks are fundamentally the same.
The rain must have made her brain all squishy, I hear you think, not so, just the ground is soggy beyond belief.
Hear my argument I urge you with open mind; as I look at the dull grey blocks of concrete, that are now stacked up in a useless pile of heavy load they are the least creative thing lying around. They are mal placed to be of any use, I have to work around them for now, hoping that one day they’ll be gone, forgotten.
Same is true for writers block, it’s a nuisance. You try to work your way around it and hope that one day that heavy load will lift and creativity will find its way back to you.
At the same time, building blocks when used properly will build you almost anything from castle to swimming pool or in my case, the foundation for a one story house.
So I dare you, why not think of writers block the same.
How? I hear you utter …
When looking at those dull grey blocks my mind wanders, away from my foundation, away from my one story house, away from this rain, and I think up all the things I could use those blocks for besides swimming pools and castles. I’ve come up with wonderful colorful ways to use that dull stuff and some will find their way into my one story house, others just made me smile and that too is nice on a rainy day.
Why not use writers blocks in the same way, let you mind wander away from the story, away from deadline, away from the ending you had set your heart on and see where that will lead you. Using writers blocks to wiggle yourself willingly into new and colorful thoughts, the worse that could happen is that it will make you smile.
